Alton Mill and Dam

A watermill on this site is recorded in mid 16th century documents. Thomas Patten & Co. began manufacturing brass wire and pins here in 1734. From 1828 it operated as either a flint, colour or paper mill. Alton Mill was a saw mill after World War I, and its three water wheels were not scrapped until World war 11 .copyright ian calderwood.

about the mill

The Alton wire mill was in fact first to go.in1828it was decided to concentrate the wire production at the newer works at Oakamoor which had up till then been mainly used for rolling and slitting . a new wire mill was built there.

This was not quiet the end of Alton .the redundant manager , John Brindley, attempted to keep it going on his own account. but he went bankrupt in the fourth of 1834 and the alton wire mill ex cheadle brass company was to let.the machinery was advertised for sale in august .although it never was used as a wire mill again. alton was then used as a paper mil lin 1836 some remnant of the the original 1736 building still stands, and there is a datestone in the wall inscibed t.p.&co 1736.

Description: The mill building was turned into a cafe some time after the mill closed c1932. The premises was also used as a petrol station for many years, which meant it was a convenient stop-off place for visitors to Alton Towers.
Alton Mill was originally one of three working mills within Alton and Farley. It operated from the late 12th century until 1708 as a corn mill belonging to Croxden Abbey, after which time it was bought by the Earl of Shrewsbury. The mill was then sub-let between 1734-1828 to Thomas Patten and partners, who made brass wire and "Golden Guineas" (brass coins used in the slave trade). During the period c1841-1867 a paper manufacturer was proprietor of the mill, and after this time it was used variously by a building contractor, wheelwright, and stone and timber merchant, before it was sold in 1932. In the distance on top of the hill is Alton Castle, which was re-built for the sixteenth Earl of Shrewsbury in the 19th century to a design by the renowned architect Pugin.

The whereabouts of John Aked are not known.  Written by Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie and Albert George Byatt, grandchikldren of James and Sarah Aked Mather.

Jim Silletto found John Aked Mather was a well-known photographer in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.  This is an excerpt from an article about biographies of people from Titusville:

"John A. Mather immigrated to the United States in 1856.  While visiting his brother in Pennsylvania, (Edmund), he met a traveling photographer and became so fascinated that he asked to be taught the business.  The pair traveled through Pennsylvania and West Virginia while Mather learned the new and difficult wet-plate process of making and finishing photographs.  By 1860, Mather struck out on his own, traveling through West Virginia, Maryland and Ohio plying his new trade.  When he learned of Edwin Drake's discovery well and the oil fervor it caused, Mather packed his equipment and headed for Titusville, Pennsylvania where he opened a studio and gallery.  Using both a horse-drawn wagon and a flat-bottomed boat (equipped with a darkroom), Mather traveled up and down the Oil Creek Valley taking photos of pioneer oil men, famous oil wells, teamsters, oil towns, and countless other aspects of the burgeoning oil industry.  For forty years, wherever Pennsylvania's oilmen went, Mather was always close behind.

John Mather's photographs recorded the significant changes that the oil boom brought to the physical and social landscapes of Pennsylvania's Oil Region.  His collection of glass-print negatives remains nearly intact and is housed at the Drake Well Museum in Titusville, PA.

There is a marker at 407 East Main Street, Titusville, PA.  This marker states:  "John A. Mather, Photographer of Oil industry from 1860, lived in this house.  His thousands of views form an extraordinary record of an industry that began here.  Born, Bury, England, died Titusville, 1915."

Three of Alice's uncles had come to America, and two of the uncles convinced John and Alice that there was money to be made in America.  They came to America and bought a farm near Denison, Iowa, but it was not a successful venture, as John had not had any previous farming experience.  John and Alice were both very industrious.  John worked as a janitor at the Denison Public Schools, and Alice was a wonderful cook and did baking for people, cakes, rolls, etc., and also catered parties.   My Mother, Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie, would help Aunt Alice with the baking.  Aunt Alice was a good housekeeper, and her home was always immaculate, even with such a large family.  The children were taught to work and helped in the home and delivered the baking that she did for people.

They were good friends and neighbors, always willing to help anyone.  In those days there were none of the modern conveniences we now have.  The heating and cook stoves burned wood and coal, and there was no indoor plumbing.  Cakes were beaten by hand, 9 x 12 rugs were taken out on the line and beaten by the boys, windows were washed inside and out.  Everything was neat and clean and a delicious aroma of baking and food cooking came from the kitchen.  For a time, in Denison, they lived at the dormitory and boarded and roomed the summer school teachers.   All of their boys were in the service during World War I.  Alice did lots of catering for her church after they moved to Des Moines.  Her church always had a food booth at the Iowa State Fair.  Alice was a very devout Methodist.  This biographical sketch was written by Louise Ritchie Marolf, her niece; and, the part about Des Moines, by Robert Silleto, grandson of John and Alice.

Notes for JOHN ALBERT SILLETTO:
John Albert and Alice Mary Byatt Silletto came to the United States from England in 1889 with their two daughters, Mary Alice and Katherine Millicent.  Their other five children were born in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa.  The English spelling of the name is Sillitto.  The first Silletto's came from Italy to England when Rome was controlled by England.  they were extra efficient pottery makers brought to England to develop the industry in the Staffordshire area, already known for fine clay.  They were all Roman Catholics.  John Silletto was the middle of three boys and since he could not inherit any of the land or cattle the family owned, he was given an academy education.  He read both Latin and Greek and was prepared for the priesthood.  He was about ready to become a priest when he fell in love with Alice Mary Byatt, and they were married on October 15, 1885.  He was apprenticed to the textile industry by parchment agreement in England.  Upon his marriage he left the Catholic Church.  This biographical sketch was written by Charles Byatt Silletto.

Three brothers, Robert, Frederick and Edmund Mather, of Alice May Mather Byatt came to the United States first.  Edmund remained in Philidelphia, while Robert and Frederick went to Denison, Crawford County, Iowa.  They dealt in real estate, and wrote and convinced John and Alice Silletto to come to the United States where they could make a lot of money.  They came to Denison about 1889.  My Mother, Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie came from England to Denison in 1890 and lived with them until she was married in 1903.  All the Silletto children were all very fond of my Mother and called her their "Little Aunt Annie".  The Silletto's  farmed for quite a few years, but it did not go well, so they moved to town in Denison.  For some time they lived in the Dormatory of the Normal School and Aunt Alice, who was a wonderful cook and did catering, boarded and roomed the students.  My brothers and sisters and the Silletto cousins were all very close.  The Silletto family later moved to Des Moines, Iowa.  My Mother, Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie, would go down and visit with them about two weeks each summer.  I can remember going with her.  I especially remember one year, when Bob Silletto was a baby, I rode to Des Moines with Arch and Anna Belle Silletto, and the older cousins took me to the amusement Parks and we went on rides.

When I was a young adult, I used to spend quite a bit of time visiting in Des Moines with the Sillettos and with my brother Charlie and his wife Blanche.

I was the closest with Katherine, and after she and Larry moved to Rockford we used to visit back and forth, as my Mother, Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie lived with us from 1941 until she died in 1953, and Katherine and Larry used to come and visit quite often.  We also visited back and forth with Ruth Bruggan and her family.  My sister Louise and I kept a regular correspondence with May Silletto Thew until she died, and Louise and I also kept in touch with the rest of the family through the years.  When I was visiting my daughter, Mary Lou von Falkenstein Schmidt, who lived in Sarasota, Florida, we went to St. Petersburg to visit Harold and Deldee Silletto.  Written by Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein, niece of John and Alice Mary Byatt Silletto.

8.  MARY ANN3 BYATT (ALICE MARY (NANCY)2 MATHER, JAMES1) was born April 25, 1869 in Alton, Staffordshire, England, and died March 10, 1950 in Milton, Rock County, Wisconsin.  She married JOHN MITCHELL RITCHIE April 02, 1903 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, son of ROBERT RITCHIE and AGNES MITCHELL.  He was born March 03, 1862 in Springville, Linn County, Iowa, and died February 24, 1934 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa.

Notes for MARY ANN BYATT:
Baptism register shows Mary, daughter of John James and Alice Mary Byatt of Alton, Joiner, baptized 25 April, 1869.

Mary Ann was a twin to Arthur, who lived only a short time after birth.  Mary Ann's mother, Alice Mather Byatt  who was stricken with rheumatism in her lower limbs soon after the birth of Arthur and Mary Ann, died when Mary Ann was 8 years old, and she then lived with her grandmother, Mary Collis Byatt, at French House in Alton, England, from age 8 until she came to America at age 21.  She lived with her sister, Alice Mary Byatt Silleto, in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, until she married John Mitchell Ritchie.  (They also lived in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa.) It is said that her nephew Archibald was broken-hearted when he was told that his "Aunt Annie" was getting married.

Mary Ann Byatt attended school at the Alton Towers, and at age 21 she received a legacy of $100.00.  With this, plus some money from her brothers Aked and Alfred, she came to America in 1890.  Weather at sea was very bad, and her fur cape came unfastened and was carried out to sea.  She came directly to the home of her sister, Alice Mary, on a farm at Charter Oak, Iowa.  She developed Scarlet Fever and was very ill, but survived.  She lived with the Silletto family when they moved into Denison, helping in the home and working for various families until her marriage.

My mother was a quiet, unassuming woman, always placing her husband and family first.  My father was head of the house, and she always let him take charge.  They got along well, no quarreling or dissention.  I'm sure she loved him very much, as he did her, and after his death she was quite lost without him.  She lived with me for several years, and spent the last years of her life with my sister, Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein.  Mother was very frail, but survived many illnesses.  She was not much over 5 feet tall, and only weighed 90 pounds when she married.  She loved flowers and always had a flower garden and did lots of fancy work.  Mother had red hair and greyish eyes and never quite lost her English accent.  She was a good friend and neighbor.  Mother loved children, and they loved her.  Mother provided much of the Byatt/Silletto family history, written in the 1940's.  This biographical sketch was written by her daughter, Louise Ritchie Marolf.

My mother told me many things about growing up in Alton, England.  She told me to be sure to write them down, because if I didn't, no one would remember them when she was gone.  Therefore, the items in this genealogy about Alton, England, and the Byatt/Collis/Mather families were told to me over the years, and I did write them down.   Mama said her father, John James Byatt was a very big man, and sometimes he would drink to excess.  When he had gone to Cheadle to deliver meat, or attend a cattle auction, Mama and her grandmother, Mary Collis Byatt, would go to the basement of the house and they could tell by the sound of the cart wells going over the bridge by the gate if he had had too much to drink.  She also said that sometimes her grandmother would get very mad at her father, and if John James Byatt knew it, he would throw his hat in through the door.  If she threw it back out, then he would not come in.  By Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein

My grandmother, Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie lived with us from the time I was a little over one year old until she died at our home when I was in sixth grade, and I have very fond memories of her life with us.  One of the highlights was our "afternoon" tea.  She always had everything ready when we came home from school, all layed out on the table with cups, saucers, napkins and spoons, along a plate of "biscuits", which is what she called cookies,  and although most of our "tea" was milk, it was a very grown-up feeling.  We would then chat about our day in school.  I believe my mother and my grandmother were very close, and I do not recall a cross word ever passing between the two of them.  Grandma was a very quiet sweet woman.  Grandma always wanted to be helpful, and unlike most Mothers-in-Law, she loved my father, and he loved her too, and would do almost anything she would ask.   I can remember her saying, on Sunday mornings, "Jerry, where are we going for our ride today?"  Whenever we went anywhere, she would be all dressed up in a nice outfit complete with hat and gloves.  I do not remember that she ever complained about anything.  I would totally concur with what my Aunt Louise said about her loving children, because she surely did.  Grandma would call us "Love" instead of by our name, and my brother Barry was always her "Littliest Love".   She always had a nice little flower garden at our house.  She told me about her life in England, and one of the things I remember was the fact that sometimes she was to take the freshly baked bread her grandmother made up the hill to Alton Towers to her Aunt's resort, and she would stop to look at some birds, animals, or the view, and was sometimes late getting to the resort with the bread.  This biographical sketch was written by Mary Lou von Falkenstein Schmidt, her granddaughter from Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein.

Notes for JOHN MITCHELL RITCHIE:
John Mitchell, second child of Agnes Mitchell and Robert Ritchie, was born at Marion, Linn County, Iowa.  When he was about 16 years of age, he left home to make his own way.  He herded sheep in Montana, and in quest of work, he traveled in nearly every state in the union.  He was also in the famous Oklahoma Land Rush.  The story about that is, an Indian Chief near the area of the land he staked out wanted John to marry his daughter, so John left his stake and returned to Iowa, settling in Denison, when he was about 38 years of age.  He met and married Mary Ann Byatt there, and they had five children.  John was of average height, and inclined to be fleshy, although when a boy and up to the time of his marriage, was tall and thin.  He had big  blue eyes, brown hair which later turned to gray, and a round face.  He was always a Republican, and brought up in a strict Presbyterian faith, although he seldom attended church as an adult.  He was very fond of horses, and for many years did team work.  He was very careful of his personal belongings, particularly his tools, and always kept his home and yard in excellent condition even though he only rented.  He was a kind and loving father and husband, generous, but was very stern in his ways.  When his mind was made up, he didn't very often change it.  John always wanted Mary Ann to look nice and liked it when she was dressed up.  He was ambitious and belived in doing his utmost for his employer, even when his health was not the best.  During his last illness, which lasted nearly two months, his pain was very severe, but he bore it with patience and fortitude.  He never attained much of this world's goods, but has left a rich heritage in his principles of honesty, industry, and kindness.  This biographical sketch was written by his daughter, Louise Ritchie Marolf.

My father had an extremely fine mind when it came to math.  He could add figures in his head faster than it could be done on paper.  Note from Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein, his daughter.

June 15, 1933 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, son of JOHN MAROLF and LENA BECK.  He was born March 21, 1894 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, and died December 27, 1968 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.

Notes for ALICE LOUISE RITCHIE:
I was the first of five children born in Denison, Iowa, to Mary Ann Byatt and John Mitchell Ritchie, born on February 24, 1904.  My brothers and sisters were Charles, Anne, Mable and Fred.  I started working at a very young age, including helping my Aunt Alice Silletto, who ran a dormatory for teachers in Denison.  I worked as City Clerk of Denison for twenty-five years.  As City Clerk I wrote by hand, all the light and water bills, waited on counter, clerked all city meetings, did the books and whatever else needed to be done in my department, and received a salary of $18.00 per week.  Louise Ritchie was married to Jack Marolf on June 15, 1933 in the Presbyterian Manse in Denison.  We moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa, in 1953.  I have been a member of the Presbyterian Church since I was five years old.  I was also a charter member of the Denison Legion Auxiliary.  Written by Louise Ritchie Marolf.

Louise Ritchie was the backbone of the family.  I don't remember her playing games.  she was either working or reading.  When Louise married Jack Marolf, my Father was sick with the cancer that later caused his death, and my Mother was also in poor health.  Jack and Louise moved into my parents home, and took care of everything, including paying all the bills.  After my Father died, my Mother moved to the home of Jack and Louise and lived with them for ten years.  After Jack's parents died, Jack and Louise sold their house in Denison and moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa, where they were semi-retired (except for the years they worked at the New Inn), and I felt they earned every bit of the enjoyment they had in Spirit Lake.  They loved to go fishing.  Louise was always a strong Presb yterian, beliving there was no other religion.  After Jack died I spent my vacations with Louise, and we took many trips, including going to Calgary, Canada, to visit our cousin May Silletto Thew and her family, and a trip to the Peace Gardens.  Louise was a delightful traveling companion.  She was an ardent baseball fan, and followed the New York Mets and Minnesota Twins.  She loved to play cards, did rug hooking, crocheted aphgans, and made quilts.  She was a fabulous cook and loved to entertain, keeping a record of her entertaining menus.  She also liked to garden, both vegetables and flowers.  Louise spent her last two years in a very nice nursing home and died suddenly at age ninety-six.  This biographical sketch was written by Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein, Louise's sister.  Auxiliary.  Mary Lou von Falkenstein Schmidt, niece of Louise.

18.  ANNA LOBELLA4 RITCHIE (MARY ANN3 BYATT, ALICE MARY (NANCY)2 MATHER, JAMES1) was born March 17, 1905 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, and died September 01, 1972 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa.  She married DANIEL HERBERT WINGROVE October 20, 1927 in Presbyterian Manse, Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, son of DANIEL WINGROVE and EDITH BOHAM.  He was born September 22, 1901 in Arion, Crawford County, Iowa, and died May 22, 1970 in Manning General Hospital, Manning, Carroll County, Iowa.

Notes for ANNA LOBELLA RITCHIE:
Ann Lobella Ritchie had red hair and blue eyes and always said, "I'm Irish and proud of it."  She was a happy and friendly person and taught bible study classes for thirty years.  Annie was an ardent baseball fan and followed the St. Louis Cardinals.  She was also a very good gardner and cook.  Annie contracted Smallpox when she was about twelve years old and it left her with bad eyes and a bad heart.   I remember hiding with my brother Fred to watch while the doctor put on his white suit to go in to see Annie.  She never completely recovered and was not very strong.  She stayed home and helped my Mother with the house.  She was learning to be a linotype operator when she met and married Dan Wingrove.  They lived on a farm during the depression.  When my Father was sick, she came in and stayed with my parents to help.  Ann and Dan later moved to Manning, Iowa, where Dan painted houses and she took care of an elderly man.  This biographical sketch was written by Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein, Ann's sister.

Notes for CHARLES BYATT RITCHIE:
I do not remember much about Charlie while growing up.  It seemed he was always away playing or going to school.  In those days older children did not play with the younger children.  He left home and went to Waterloo when he was quite young, and drove a truck for the Waterloo Laundry, where he learned to be a dry cleaner.  Later, he got my brother Fred a job there too.  Charlie was an extremely intelligent person, and learned to do everything he wanted to do, such as riding horses and flying an airplane.  When I lived and worked in Waterloo, and Charlie was married to Blanche, I saw more of him, even when he was living in Des Moines.  I have quite a few pictures of us and also of me with Bud and Barbara.  This biographical sketch was written by Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein, Charlie's sister.

20.  MABLE KATHERINE4 RITCHIE (MARY ANN3 BYATT, ALICE MARY (NANCY)2 MATHER, JAMES1) was born January 20, 1910 in Near Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, and died December 06, 2003 in Stoughton Hospital, Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin.  She married JEROME HOWARD VON FALKENSTEIN June 19, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa, son of CHARLES FALKENSTEIN and CLARA WEEKLEY.  He was born September 27, 1905 in Waterloo, Blackhawk County, Iowa, and died November 15, 1962 in Milton, Rock County, Wisconsin.

Notes for MABLE KATHERINE RITCHIE:
Mable Ritchie grew up in Denison, Iowa, the fourth of five children.  She had deep auburn hair, dark hazel eyes, and was very beautiful.    Mother had a happy childhood and played with her brother Fred and the neighborhood children and her cousins (Children of John and Alice Mary Silletto).

Mable Ritchie was a woman before her time.  She was way out in front with her lifestyle and was a "Woman's Libber" before the expression was ever coined.  Mable went to Waterloo after high school and worked at the Waterloo Laundry where her brothers Charles and Fred worked.  She burned her hand very severely, leaving it quite twisted.  She used the settlement money to go to business school in Omaha, Nebraska, at a time when few women pursued higher education or careers.  Mable always felt women should use their brains for something beyond housework and child rearing.  I was always very proud of the fact that my Mother worked outside the home.

She met my father, Jerry von Falkenstein in Waterloo, Iowa.  they were married on June 19, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  My father was a tool and die maker with John Deere in Waterloo.  He always loved Wisconsin, as he had an Uncle in Ladysmith who he had visited and hunted with.  He got a job as a tool and die maker foreman at Fairbanks Morse in Beloit, Wisconsin, which suited him just fine because he loved to fish and hunt.  When I was almost one year old, my Grandmother, Mary Ann Byatt Ritchie, came to live with us.  she and my mother got along very well, and I do not ever remember a cross word between them.  Mother and my Uncle Fred were very close, and Fred's wife Alene was my Mother's best friend.

Mable was very intelligent, a voracious reader, active in Republican politics, loved to play cards (especially bridge), an outstanding seamstress and fantastic knitter.  She has always been an ardent sports fan, especially baseball.  The Milwaukee Braves was her team until they moved to Atlanta, and she then became a Milwaukee Brewers fan, never passing up a chance to go to baseball games in Milwaukee.  Mother was also active in various groups in Milton, including being a band mother when we were in school and a charter member of the Milton Women's Club and started the Applied Arts Group in the late 1940's.  Mother was also very different as a "Mother".  All my friends liked to come to our house because they liked my Mother.  She was never too busy to play games with us, or, as we got older, visit with us.  My best girlfriend would come and ask Mother questions she was afraid to ask her mother.  Mother was always very outgoing, with a host of good friends who valued her friendship, and she always had a very positive outlook in life.  This biographical sketch was written by Mary Lou von Falkenstein Schmidt, her daughter.

Notes for JEROME HOWARD VON FALKENSTEIN:
Jerome Howard von Falkenstein was born in Waterloo, Iowa on September 17, 1905.  When his parents were divorced, he and his brothers and sisters lived for several years in a Catholic orphanage, as his Mother did not have the means to support her children.  This was before the days of Social Security and when women did not work outside the home.  When his Mother married George Knittle, the children returned to live with them.

Jerome (or Jerry) apprenticed with John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa to become a tool and die maker.  Jerry loved hunting and fishing, and had spent quite a bit of time in Ladysmith, with his Uncle William Pittenger Weekly so he could hunt and fish, as there was not much hunting and fishing in Iowa.  In 1938 he and Mable moved to Beloit, Wisconsin, so he could practice his tool and die trade at Fairbanks Morse and he would have the opportunity to involve himself in all the hunting and fishing Wisconsin had to offer.  They later lived in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin before finally settling in Milton, Wisconsin.  During World War II he was too old to enter the military, but worked at two government jobs as a tool and die maker.  He worked in Fairbanks Morse where they made parts for submarines, and at Oldsmobile (later called General Motors) where they made other military parts.  He and Fred Ritchie opened a dry cleaning plant in Milton called Unique Dry Cleaners after World War II.

My father was an extraordinary man.  He loved children and spent much time with his children and the neighborhood children in various activities.  He taught us all how to hunt and fish and to "play fair".   Many young men in Milton used to hang out at Unique Dry Cleaners to visit with him.  Unique Dry Cleaners sponcered the Milton Merchants baseball team and printed programs for all the Milton College sporting events.  I remember traveling all around in Rock, Walworth and Jefferson counties for the Milton Merchant's baseball games.

Jerry may have had a difficult childhood, including having Typhoid fever where he lost all his hair and nearly died, however, he had a totally positive outlook on life and now I'm older, I sometimes feel he was an "angel" here on earth.  He had such wisdom on how do deal with people, and, basically, felt everyone was good.  I, even today, find myself acting and reacting the way he taught us.  He instilled in all three of us a very high degree of self-worth.  Everyone loved Jerry, and Jerry loved everyone.   (Mary Lou von Falkenstein Schmidt)

Notes for JOHN FREDERICK RITCHIE:
Fred Ritchie was my younger brother and we grew up playing together and as adults were very close.  As children we played with the Byers children, who were our neighbors in Denison.  We played ball a lot.  when Fred was about sixteen, he was helping a delivery man in Denison, and our brother Charlie said he should come to Waterloo and go to work for the Waterloo laundry, and he did.  I also went to Waterloo and worked at the Waterloo Laundry.  While living in Waterloo, i became very good friends with Alene Fisher, and I introduced her to Fred.  We all danced a lot, and went to ballrooms where big bands like Wayne King played.  We often competed in dancing marathons at Electric Parks in Waterloo.  Fred and Alene were married on June 30, 1933, and I stood up with them.  Fred loved to garden, hunt, fish, and play golf.  He and Alene lived in California for a short time where Fred was a longshoreman and Alene worked at Firestone.  Fred came to Wisconsin because Jerry and I lived there.  Shortly after Fred got a job, he was drafted into World War II.  While Fred was in the Army, Alene, Jack and Mick lived for a time in Lamont, Iowa, and then lived with us.  Our two familes were very close and our children grew up together.  At Alene's memorial service I said that she and I were sisters-in-law for 60 years and best friends for 62 years.  This biographical sketch was written by Mable Ritchie von Falkenstein, Fred's sister.

Notes for STUART BYATT:
Radio Officer Stuart Byatt was on a ship torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean in 1943.  The ship sank within ten minutes.  Byatt and another radio officer  were given citations for great courage and gallantry.  They gave up their places in the rubber dinghy in order that two badly-injured men might rest more comfortably.  Then, in spite of the great and constant risk of being attacked,  they swam alongside, keeping the sharks and barracuda away from the injured men.  Byatt, the other radio officer, George Henry, were in the water for thirty-six hours before being rescued.  Article from the Telegraph Argus, August 12, 1943.
